Self-Care Starter Kit: 5 Self-Care Essentials

Self-Care

For many of us, self-care seems selfish. How dare we take a time out of our day for ourselves. This is especially hard if we have spent the majority of our lives caring for others. We often think that things just won’t get done if we take a break. But sometimes we need to take a break to make sure things are doing to the best of our abilities. It’s very easy to neglect ourselves, but I think it’s important that we take time daily to make sure that we are loving to ourselves…even if it’s just a few minutes.

That problem with self-care is that everyone always talks about self-care and how people should practice it more or better, but there is no manual for self-care. How does it look like to practice self-care more? I’m not quite sure how to answer that, but I do know it’s important that we identify how to love and care for ourselves better and, the MOST important part, ACT on what we identify.

You are responsible for you, so take care of you. And here are a few affordable products that can help you step up your self-care game. With self-care becoming a hot topic, tons of self-care lists have things like $100 blankets, $50 bath oils and $75 candles. Not this list, because I am frugal (cough, cough cheap), nothing on my list is over thirty bucks!

Five Self-Care Essentials

Diffusers and Essential Oils

If you are feeling stressed and need to relax, a diffuser and essential oils help. An oil diffuser can also help you focus and get more work done. It’s an efficient way to freshen up your space and lighten up your mood. It doesn’t take a whole lot of work, but it still an effective act of self-care. You can check out some essential oil recipes here, and pick up this diffuser and some of these essential oils on Amazon.

Journals

A big part of self-care is mindfulness. Journals give us the ability to acknowledge and reflect on our feelings. Through writing our thoughts daily we are able to release some of our feelings of guilt and fear, and also celebrate our wins and express gratitude. Taking 15 minutes out of our can lead to better self-awareness, and once we are aware of those feelings we can begin to understand what we need and how we can care for ourselves a lot better. Here are some cute journals that I think you would love. 1/2/3

Books

Not just books about self-care, any books. It can be whatever you enjoy reading. It’s all about sitting down and taking time out of your day to do something YOU love. I recently started to set aside 15 minutes a day to read. Before having children, I used to read all the time. Now, I would be lucky if I read 4 books a year. Reading is something I love to do, so I am setting aside time to make sure I do something I enjoy. For the next 30 day, I will be reading The Faith Dare by Debbie Alsodorf, you can pick it up HERE. It’s more of a devotional with daily activities or prompts, so if you are looking for a bible study you may want to check it out.

Candles

Candles make everything better. Journal by candle light? Bubble bath by candle light? At home spa treatment by candle light? Make yourself feel real special and light a candle. Unwind and relax. If you want to feel relaxed make sure you pick up scents like lavender and vanilla because they have relaxation properties. Or if you want to feel comfy and at home check out scents with mahogany or sandalwood. Here are a few Etsy candles that you could check out. 1/2/3

A Wellness Plan

Get up and move. Do you know how many master plans are concocted on a treadmill? How about how much stress could be released during downward dog? Whether you want to do yoga or twerk your way to self-care, getting active is an amazing way to take care of your mind and body.

So, there you have it, a few resources to help you practice better self-care. Self-care is a simple concept. It’s all about listening to what you need mentally or physically in order to show up as your best self. What’s difficult about self-care is having the guts to actually step back and take care of ourselves. I hope this list shows you ways that you can sneak in self-care a couple of minutes a day at a low cost.

Remember, you got this, and God’s got you!

Love,
Jenell
